FCP Euro Atlas Basecamp

We wanted the Atlas to be a true Basecamp machine—capable, practical, and stylish, so we outfitted it with a robust parts spec.

On the exterior, we added the VW Basecamp Accessories Kit, a Bedrock platform from CapRock, a rooftop tent, awning, auxiliary lights, and rugged lighting packages from Thule and Hella. Under the hood, we relied on trusted names like AFE for intake, Hengst for cabin air, Odyssey for the battery, and genuine VW parts for the water pump, PCV, and ignition components—everything aimed at boosting performance and reliability on the trail. For the drivetrain and service, we strengthened it with Febi transmission and Haldex kits, Motul diff fluids, and VW-spec bearings and control arms. Inside, we focused on utility and comfort using B2BFAB’s MOLLE panel and start/stop kill switch, along with OEM floor mats and a dog gate. To complete the suspension, we installed a B2BFAB's lift and Bilstein B4 shocks, giving us the ground clearance and ride quality we needed. The wheels and brakes setup—Fifteen52 wheels wrapped in Toyo RT Trail tires with Ate and Akebono brake components—tied it all together for serious capability.

The MQB Platform

The Atlas, launched in the USA in 2017, is based on the modular transverse toolkit (MQB) – one of the most innovative technical platforms in the automotive industry. The seven-seater SUV, which is 5,037 mm long, 1,979 mm wide and 1,768 mm high, is the largest MQB model to date. With this all-rounder, Volkswagen has successfully entered the key US segment of the mid-size SUV – a type of vehicle often favored by families. The Atlas is powered either by a four-cylinder turbocharged engine with 175 kW / 238 PS or by a VR6 unit with 206 kW / 280 PS. Optionally, the VR6 may be combined with four-wheel drive. Standard equipment includes: eight-speed automatic transmission, LED headlights and App-Connect as a smart phone interface. The Atlas is manufactured at the US plant in Chattanooga.

VW Atlas Buyer's Guide - Models, Engines, Options, And More!

The Volkswagen Atlas was built for the American market. It's a big SUV with many seats, some off-road capability, and the ride height that many people claim they need. As such, you can see them all over suburbia, heading to sports practice or the grocery store, keeping their occupants safe and comfortable. If that sounds like something you're after, this video is for you. In the near decade it's been around, VW has offered a handful of variants with multiple engine options and a few facelifts. These come with varying trim, options, performance, and economy, so knowing exactly what you're after ahead of time will save you hassle during the purchase process. You can look elsewhere online for details about their differences, but why would you? You can learn all you need to know right here. In this video, Nathan Brown, FCP Euro's VAG Product Director, takes you through a Volkswagen Atlas buyer's guide.
