The Volvo 900 series, introduced in 1990 to replace the previous 700 series was built until 1998 and was the last of the rear-wheel-drive Volvos. The 940 was very similar to the outgoing 740, with the sedan having softer curves in the rear and the wagon version being nearly unchanged. With the 960 introduced the first Volvo "whiteblock" engine with an all-aluminum inline six-cylinder. By 1995, the 960 had revised front and rear ends and towards the very end of production, Volvo renamed the 960 the S90/V90.
